After our trip to search for obsidian last year, we had been wanting to make another rock hounding trip. So for our next Spring Break activity, we met my parents at Topaz Mountain down by Delta
to see if we could find any topaz.
We knew the general area to go and had a few directions via the internet, but we really had
no idea what we were doing. :) We looked around one area for awhile. We found a few small
pieces in the sand. It was cool because if you looked a certain way at the loose sand, you could see
the topaz pieces twinkling. We tried looking for cracks in the rocks where they were supposed
to be hidden, but we didn't find any that way.
Eventually we spoke with some other rock hounders that were there and they pointed us in the direction of this shale type rock and told us a little bit about how to find them. We still
didn't have much luck, but it was fun to hunt for them. Next time we will try to do even
more research and come better prepared!
The kids had lots of fun playing in the rocks and looking for topaz.
